I chose to complete the National Diploma in PR Full Time with the European Institute of Communications in 2015. My dream was always to work on a European level, for this reason Eugene recommended that I also complete the Post Graduate Diploma in European Public Affairs and European Studies. Despite being sceptical at first due to the fact that I have a BA in Politics, I couldn’t be more thankful that I took his advice. Not only was the course content perfect for me to start my career at the centre of Europe in terms of giving me an in depth understanding of the political workings of the European Institutions, but having the course on my CV made me much more attractive to employers in the Brussels ‘bubble’. If you are searching for a job in any consultancy, European institution or trade association this diploma is vital in order to gain a clear current understanding of public affairs in this unique and complex supranational environment. Thanks to the dedication of David Grant and Eugene Grey I am now working in Brussels with offers from the European parliament and the Commission. I therefore highly recommend the course.

Working in the political sphere, I was searching for a course that combined my passion for public affairs with my ambition to learn more about the European Union and European legislation. I was delighted when I saw that the European Institute of Communications was offering a Post Graduate Diploma in European Public Affairs and European Studies. This course equips students with both a knowledge of European Affairs while also teaching students how to manage a public affairs campaign with a European dimension.
In the first half of the course you learn about Europe’s interesting culture and History, the political structure of the EU, European Integration and the history of EU Treaties. It was fascinating to learn about how law is made in the EU and the impact of these laws in Ireland.
The most beneficial part of the course for me was studying the tools and techniques for engaging with the EU institutions which included strategy, networking, coalitions and lobbying. We studied the ethics surrounding lobbying and the need for transparency in lobbying and steps taken in this direction such as the Regulation of Lobbying Act 2015. We learned how to implement a public affairs campaign regarding the recent European Commission public consultation on possible action addressing the challenges of work-life balance faced by working parents and caregivers. The skills I developed have greatly benefited my career and have increased my employment prospects.
My favourite part of the course was the three-day field trip to Brussels. Here we visited the European Commission, European Council and European Parliament. We stayed in the beautiful Leuven Institute and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
Without hesitation, I would recommend this course to my colleagues, friends and family. Both David and Eugene are experienced, helpful, practical and provided excellent support and quality educational service throughout. I am proud to be an alumni member of the European Institute!
